PalmyAg is looking for a hands-on General Engineer to join our workshop team in Palmerston North.
This is a practical role for someone who enjoys working on agricultural machinery, solving mechanical problems, and seeing a machine go from tired and worn to safe, reliable, and ready to work again.
The Role
As a General Engineer, you will be responsible for the refurbishment, servicing, repair, fabrication and maintenance of used farm machinery.
You will work primarily in our workshop, with occasional customer or operational site visits when required. You will assess incoming machinery, identify faults and required repairs, strip equipment down, complete mechanical and structural repairs, weld and fabricate components, rebuild machinery and test it before it is returned to service or offered for sale.
You'll be working closely with our Service and Parts Technician, who provides day-to-day technical direction on refurbishment projects, as well as the Sales and Service Manager who sets overall priorities and standards.
What You'll Be Doing:- Assessing used agricultural machinery and identifying repair and refurbishment requirements
- Servicing and repairing silage wagons and other farm equipment
- Stripping down machinery and components for repair or rebuild
- Diagnosing mechanical faults, wear, corrosion and structural damage
- Repairing and replacing worn or damaged components
- Welding and fabricating machinery frames, panels and components
- Cutting, shaping and fitting replacement panels and parts
- Fabricating replacement components where required
- Rebuilding machinery and assemblies
- Carrying out final checks and testing to ensure machinery is safe and operating correctly
- Preparing refurbished machinery to a high standard for resale
- Attending customer or operational sites for servicing, fault diagnosis and repairs when required
- Keeping your work area clean, organised and safe
- Identifying additional faults, parts and materials required and communicating these early
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who is practical, mechanically minded and takes pride in their work.
You will ideally have:- Experience working with agricultural, heavy, automotive or similar machinery
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and repair skills
- Welding and fabrication experience
- The ability to work confidently with hand tools, workshop machinery and lifting equipment
- Good attention to detail and a strong focus on quality
- The ability to work independently and make sensible decisions on the job
- A safety-first approach
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a small team
- A willingness to get stuck in and take ownership of the quality of your work
A formal engineering qualification is an advantage, but practical experience and the right attitude are equally important.
What We Offer
This is an opportunity to join a practical, hands-on agricultural machinery business where you can work on a wide range of equipment and see the results of your work every day.
You'll be part of a team where quality matters. Our goal is to put machinery back into the field or onto the sales floor safe, reliable and ready to perform - without shortcuts or unnecessary rework.
If you're an experienced engineer or mechanic who enjoys fixing things properly, fabricating solutions and working on real farm machinery, we'd like to hear from you.
