Take ownership of an entire independent retailer operation
Ideal career leadership opportunity for a cycling enthusiast
Competitive salary, plus commission, bonuses & staff discounts
Established 26 years ago, Pushbikes has cemented itself as Canterbury's largest independent multi-store bike shop. We're passionate about cycling in all its forms and committed to bringing the best products and advice to our customers. As we continue to grow, we're looking for an experienced retail leader to take ownership of our day-to-day operations, lead our team, and drive performance across the business. This role will be primarily based at our Papanui store with regular travel to our Rangiora and St Martins stores.
What you'll be doing
As Operations Manager, you'll oversee the operation as a whole, working across our three stores and the wider team that keeps the business running, including our website with its support, database and marketing people. You'll lead and support the team, lift store standards, drive sales performance across the network, and own the people and HR side of the business end to end.
You'll make the day-to-day operational calls with support from the owner, while they focus on strategy, marketing and growth, trusting you to run things on the ground. It's a hands-on leadership role for someone who takes ownership and gets on with it.
Your responsibilities will include:- Lead and support the store managers through regular one-on-ones covering sales, rostering, leave, staff, stock and presentation, driving performance reviews, developing the team, and stepping in on issues as they arise
- Lead recruitment, own onboarding end to end, and keep HR documentation, policies and manuals current
- Oversee stock planning and purchasing budgets, coordinating seasonal stock builds with the owner and managers
- Review weekly sales data across all stores, identify gaps and opportunities, and make sure actions are followed through
- Run regular store assessments to keep presentation and stock standards consistently high, and plan cover around staff changes, leave and seasonal peaks
- Be the first port of call for day-to-day issues, keeping teams focused, solving problems before they reach the owner, and stepping onto the floor when it counts
- Foster a healthy, positive team culture across the stores, recognising that engaged, well-supported staff are the foundation of productivity and performance
- Drive productivity and consistent performance across the network, building the operational foundation for future growth and expansion
- Chair regular meetings across the store, web and key digital teams, connecting them so everyone is working to the same priorities and the bigger picture, and report to the owner through a structured weekly catch-up
What we're looking for:- Solid leadership experience, ideally across multiple sites or as an area manager, whether from retail, the cycling trade, or a related industry
- Can lead and get the best from a team of managers without the owner in the room
- Comfortable on the shop floor and equally confident in a planning or strategy conversation
- Commercially aware, and understands how operations, staff performance and sales connect
- Stays calm and capable with difficult staff and customer situations
- Self-directed, and doesn't need to be told what to do every day
- A systems thinker who looks at how things are done and makes them better
- Strong computer and technical skills, and can pick up our point-of-sale, inventory and reporting systems quickly
- Genuinely suited to an independent retailer rather than a corporate environment
What you'll get
This is a rare chance to take genuine ownership of an entire operation: three stores, a growing online business, and the team behind it, with the authority to run it your way and the owner's backing to do it. You won't be a cog in a corporate machine; you'll be the person shaping how this business runs and helping drive its next phase of growth.
As we expand, you'll be the one building the operational foundation it's all built on:- Competitive salary, plus commission and bonuses
- Staff discounts and other incentives, ideal if you're a cycling enthusiast
- A flexible working environment wherever possible
- The chance to work with like-minded people and the latest in bikes and technology
- Ongoing training and development opportunities
