More than CAD - design solutions that are built in the real world
Own projects from enquiry through to fabrication and installation
Join a growing Taupo business where your input truly matters
Dan Hay Fabrication is a growing, well-respected fabrication business delivering high-quality custom fabrication solutions across residential, commercial, and architectural projects. As our workload continues to grow, we're looking for an experienced Fabrication Designer to become a key part of the team.
This is not a role for someone who simply produces drawings and moves on.
We're looking for someone who can take ownership of projects from initial enquiry through to fabrication and installation, ensuring designs are practical, accurate, efficient to manufacture, and delivered successfully. You'll play a pivotal role in keeping projects flowing smoothly between clients, the workshop, and site teams.
About the Role
As our Fabrication Designer, you'll be responsible for creating fabrication-ready designs while helping coordinate the technical side of projects. You'll work closely with clients, fabricators, builders, architects, engineers, and suppliers to ensure every project is designed with real-world manufacturing and installation in mind.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys being involved in the entire process - not just sitting behind a computer creating drawings.
Key Responsibilities:- Create accurate fabrication, manufacturing, and assembly drawings
- Develop detailed 3D models and fabrication-ready documentation
- Review plans and identify potential design or construction issues before fabrication begins
- Conduct site measurements and gather project information where required
- Liaise with clients, builders, architects, engineers, and suppliers
- Assist with material take-offs, quoting, and project planning
- Support workshop teams with clear and practical fabrication information
- Help drive efficient project delivery from enquiry through to installation
About you
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:- Strong CAD experience, preferably using Autodesk Inventor
- Experience producing fabrication-ready workshop drawings
- Solid understanding of fabrication processes and manufacturing methods
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, engineering, and construction drawings
- Practical understanding of how projects are built and installed
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication skills and a client-focused approach
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of your projects
- A positive attitude and strong work ethic
Bonus points for:- Laser cutting and CNC file preparation experience
- 3D rendering and modelling skills
- Experience with nesting software and material optimisation
- Site measuring experience
- Quoting and estimating experience
- Experience in architectural fabrication, structural steel, stainless steel, sheetmetal, construction, or manufacturing industries
- Trade qualification in fabrication, engineering, drafting, design, or a related field
Why join Dan Hay Fabrication?
This is an opportunity to become a key member of a growing business where your input genuinely matters. You'll have the chance to take ownership, improve systems, influence project outcomes, and work on a wide variety of interesting fabrication projects.
You'll be joining a team that values quality workmanship, practical thinking, strong relationships, and continuous improvement.
If you're a designer who understands fabrication, enjoys solving problems, and wants to play a significant role in delivering successful projects, we'd love to hear from you.
