Explore NZ’s best hidden spots from Auckland to Bluff

Picture this.
Enjoying a sunrise coffee beside an alpine lake. Soaking in a natural hot spring surrounded by native woodland. Hearing native birdsong in the middle of the bush. Catching a sunset over the mountains, or next to a campfire on the beach.
Doing this with a bus full of strangers from all around the world who will end the journey as lifelong mates. The best part? You’re their Guide, and you’re paid to do this every day.
Stray have been showing travellers around our beautiful backyard of Aotearoa/New Zealand for years. We love veering off the tourist track and into the unique places that make this country magic. We know a true highlight of every traveller’s journey is the Tour Guide who makes it special, and we’re on the lookout for someone who can do just that.
Stray Tour Guides lead trips right across the country, from Auckland to Bluff and everywhere in between. You’ll be in charge of showing travellers the beauty of Aotearoa, leading their adventure and keeping things running smoothly on the road. If you’re passionate about New Zealand, then we want you!
What the role looks like You’ll be able to:- Driving multi-day tours across both islands
- Lead groups of international travellers
- Share stories, local knowledge and make recommendations
- Check people into their accommodation and activities
- Keep things organised, and stay calm and take initiative when plans change
- Make sure everyone feels safe, included and supported
- Bring energy and enthusiasm to the trip every day
The best part of this job? No two tours, and no two days are the same.
Some days are big adventure days, while some are slower and more laid-back.
Some days are slightly chaotic (though it’s our job to ensure the travellers never notice), while others are free for you to relax and explore.
That’s all part of the experience.
If you thrive on routine and predictability, this probably isn’t the job for you.
If you love people, adventures, problem-solving and being out in the world, this is probably your dream role!
You’ll fit in well if you’re:- Naturally good with people
- A confident and empathetic speaker
- Easy-going but organised
- Calm under pressure
- Adaptable and able to think on your feet
- Genuinely passionate about Aotearoa and sharing it with others
You’ll need:- A New Zealand Class 2 licence and P endorsement - small and large (or be willing to get them)
- A current First Aid Certificate (or be willing to get one)
- You will need a minimum of two years' experience delivering multi-day tours.
- The flexibility to spend up to 29 days on tour at a time, including weekends and public holidays
- The right to work in New Zealand
What we offer:- Competitive pay + commission, with an hourly rate of $30-36 per hour on offer
- Full training and support
- Scheduled time off between tours, you'll be working a minimum of 152 hours in a 3 week period with 1 week off
- A solid supportive team who genuinely care about what they do
- The chance to travel all over Aotearoa as part of your job
- Opportunities to support our community and conservation partners
- Familiarisation trips and experiences across the country
- A job that feels like an adventure, where every trip brings something new
We are passionate about New Zealand, and it matters to us that we show off our country with enthusiasm, respect and genuine care for the people, places and cultures that make it so special. Our Guides are a huge part of that. So if you’re good with humans, keen for adventure, and want a job that keeps you on your toes, we’d love to hear from you.
Send us your CV and a cover letter telling us a bit about yourself and why you’d make a great Stray guide.
