About the role
You will support the Orchard Manager in the day-to-day operations of the orchard, ensuring optimal productivity, quality, and compliance with health and safety standards. You'll lead teams, oversee orchard activities, and step into the manager's role when required. This is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic horticultural environment, this role offers variety and the opportunity to contribute to a growing business known for producing world-class cherries.
Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:- Supervise and motivate orchard staff and seasonal workers
- Assist in planning and executing orchard operations including pruning, frost fighting, spraying, harvesting, helicopters and irrigation
- Irrigation, including maintenance. Ensuring faults are fixed, clear filters, watering trees/programs based on probe moisture readings and physically checking soil layers for optimal pre-harvest and post-harvest irrigation. Adjustment of schedules based on water requirements as well as winterisation/de-winterisation procedures
- Oversee pruning, including mulching and debris removal
- Oversee tree training including bud rubbing on young trees and when we convert trees to our new growing system
- Provide training and supervision of all orchard staff. This includes preparing plans and recording information related to each worker where necessary
- Weed control programs
- Mowing (on going)
- Maintaining roads, tracks and fixing ruts within the property
- Frost fighting, including preparation and maintenance of windmills, irrigation, frost covers an frost pots so we have confidence they are in operational condition
- Disease control ensuring pruners sanitise their pruning equipment between trees and after each diseased or dead wood cut.
- Pest control (birds and rabbits) as well as pest and rodent traps in all areas of the orchard including the accommodation areas
- Liaising, working, and approving in consultation with the orchard manager, all consultants, contractors, service providers and suppliers related to maintaining the orchard for the purposes of producing quality fruit and keeping the orchard in pristine condition
- Gathering and getting the team to accurately complete weekly timesheets and with the supervision of the orchard manager look to sign off and approve for payroll
- Assisting with the helicopter contracting post rain events
- Be comfortable to step into the Orchard Manager's role during absences.
- Ensure optimal recovery of high quality fruit
- Checking picker performance reports and quality reports and making necessary performance adjustments in the field with the support of the supervisors
- Health and safety.
